This project gave me the opportunity to learn a few new skills and cross over from web design, identity illustration and photography.
It started with a identity refresh because the name of the organization had changed and we wanted a more modern typeface that would reproduce well on merchandise. I also designed a t-shirt, hoodie, sweatpants and stickers for the club members using the updated logo.
Since I was a member of this club for four years while I lived in Knoxville, I had quite a large collection of photos that I had taken of the venue. This gave us a nice start for the website imagery and I have added a few more recent photos from regattas and the new facilities.
The website was my first time using ExpressionEngine CMS, HTML5, CSS3 and responsive layouts. I learned so much about all of these technologies and I feel like I have really changed and improved my whole design process. This website works across a wider range of devices and browsers than any site I’ve ever built. ExpressionEngine allowed so much flexibility with the code and didn’t limit my designs like other CMSs. The clients love the control panel experience because it’s so intuitive to manage the content.
Five-Star Heart – Navy Football Films
Description
In the military, there is no higher rank than that of five-star general or five-star admiral. The client wanted something representative of the university’s military roots for use in the highlight reels. Also, the big-time blue-chip athlete is often described as a “five-star athlete.” Navy Football believes that they win with heart, determination and teamwork. They believe these characteristics are more important than raw talent. So the objective of this identity was to express the belief that five-star heart trumps the five-star talent. It is a way to express who Navy Football is as a football program.

Why Weight?

Why Weight? is a non-surgical weight management program. The logo plays off of the double meaning of the word ‘weight’ and incorporates a visual reference to scales and clocks. I used an open source font called Mido.
